Project & Interim Finance & Accounting
"Whether a key accounting position has been vacated recently or you have a special finance project, I am available to step in on an interim basis and help bridge the gap. With a wide breadth of experience, I can hit the ground running at your company."
"As with most accountants, much of my day is spent in Excel. I've found in financial modeling that when you need a relatively quick but effective solution, many times the answer to the problem can be accomplished in Excel. Excel is hard to beat when it comes to functionality, flexibility, and over-all ability to address a need in a short time-frame."
Joe Wayne has 30 years’ experience in finance and accounting having been involved with many companies in many business environments. He started his career out of college at a local public accounting firm in Canton, Ohio doing audits and reviews as well as federal, state, & local tax return preparation.
After two years in public accounting, Joe made the move into industry and corporate accounting, starting in general accounting roles then moving to financial planning & analysis. During this time, he worked in a series of manufacturing environments. When he was downsized from one of these companies, he started working as an independent contractor doing project work. Oftentimes, he found himself in companies that were emerging from insolvency or other distressed situations. Many of the companies he worked with had weak systems, so he had to learn to leverage the power of Excel to build models to assist management in running the business. Those models ranged from company-wide budget models to inventory valuation models. As a power user of Excel, he used the functionality and flexibility in the program to build reporting models and other purpose-driven tools to address a gap in a company’s systems.
Joe’s experience includes several roles in an FP&A capacity. He has designed comprehensive budgeting models with detail build-up by cost center and plant. Additionally, he has set-up reporting templates that compare budget (or forecast) to actual at various levels: department, plant, and company. Joe has built “bridge reports” to help explain differences between budget and actual and to provide management with insightful analysis.
At one large company with over 2,000 employees, Joe created a multi-year payroll model to budget wages, salaries, and benefits. This multi-site electricity producer and retailer used this model as key input in its company-wide budget. In another lengthy project, Joe was responsible for modeling the property and business interruption claim at a company that suffered a catastrophic explosion at one of its manufacturing facilities. The total claim was in excess of $100 million.
Joe has participated and managed the monthly closing process at a number of companies. At several companies, he has worked with the accounting team to streamline the closing process and achieved a quicker turn-around of the financial statements. He has built models that take an adjusted trial balance and roll-up into a complete set of GAAP financial statements including income statement, balance sheet, and cash flows (both indirect and direct). He has been the main liaison with the outside auditing firm coordinating information requests and ensured that the audit was completed timely. Additionally, in several companies where there was an ownership change, Joe has been involved in the purchase accounting.
Much of his career has been spent in manufacturing environments. In various roles, Joe has participated and led the monthly closing process and taking inventories. His experience includes the complete budgeting process from meeting with department managers for input, build-up of the budget with numerous iterations, to final delivery of an approved budget to management. In most cases, the detailed budget would be built up by plant and by cost center.
Using the annual budget as a starting point, he has built spreadsheets to calculate overhead rates, make cost allocations between departments, and spread service center costs. Joe has developed reporting that pulled in G/L data to show department managers how their spending is progressing throughout the month. Finally, Joe has been involved in the capital spending process, from building up the CapEx budget to project evaluation and return. At one automotive client, Joe worked with the Cost Accounting Manager and the Engineering Manager to develop the cost estimating template that the company used to cost each part in its portfolio and to quote new business.
At several companies, Joe has been responsible for managing the reporting of the revolving line of credit, including monitoring receivables and inventory to maximize liquidity. He is experienced in creating cash forecasts including the standard 13-week rolling cash forecast. Joe has had to put these skills to use at companies where liquidity was strained, and the company’s viability was in question.
Joe has had several projects where he was involved with companies that were in or emerging from insolvency or in a complete wind-down and dissolution. He has acted as court-appointed receiver or in similar roles at a handful of companies, where his responsibility was to collect receivables, lay-off employees, liquidate all assets in the most practical and beneficial timeframe, and make distributions to the secured creditors.
Joe has worked at companies of varying sizes, with annual revenues of $30 million to over $2 billion. He has worked at companies with ownership structures ranging from private equity to a family-owned business. Projects that Joe has been engaged in have lasted as little as a month to longer than two years. He enjoys applying his broad experience to divergent settings and seeing the way different companies do things.
Although Joe’s assignments have taken him all over the United States, currently he is available to work remotely from his home office in Uniontown, Ohio and he would be available for on-site work or meetings in the greater Akron/Canton, Ohio area.
